What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Visit
Your first chiropractic visit at JP Chiropractic is designed to clarify what may be contributing to your concern, whether care is appropriate, and which next steps fit your goals.
1. Conversation and Health History
We discuss what brought you in, how your symptoms affect daily life, relevant health history, previous injuries or treatment, and what you hope to accomplish. Clear information helps us tailor the examination to your needs.
2. Physical Examination
Your examination may include posture and movement assessment, range-of-motion testing, orthopedic and neurological tests, palpation, and other condition-specific procedures. X-rays or other imaging are recommended only when clinically indicated.
INSiGHT Thermography and Digital X-rays
Our West Ashley office uses INSiGHT Millennium thermography scans to record skin-temperature patterns along both sides of your spine. This non-invasive thermal scan uses no ionizing radiation. Your doctor interprets the readings alongside your health history and physical examination.
Digital X-rays provide a different type of information: images of bones, spinal alignment and certain structural changes. We recommend X-rays when clinically indicated by your history and examination, and explain why imaging is recommended before proceeding.
Learn when imaging may be useful and what a lower back X-ray can show in our guide to chiropractic X-rays in Charleston.
We discuss which assessments fit your needs, including considerations for children and pregnancy. Your examination and any recommended testing help guide the conversation about care.
3. Findings and Recommendations
We explain the findings in understandable language, answer questions, and discuss treatment options, alternatives, expected costs, and any need for referral. In some cases treatment may begin on the first visit; in others, additional review is appropriate first.
What to Bring and How to Prepare
- Bring your identification and insurance card
- Wear comfortable clothing when possible
- Bring relevant imaging or medical reports
- Tell us about medications, pregnancy, implants, or major conditions
- Ask questions at any point during the visit
Will I Be Adjusted at the First Visit?
Treatment may begin at the first appointment when your doctor has enough information and care is appropriate. In other situations, reviewing records, obtaining indicated imaging or arranging a referral may come first. An appointment is not a promise that a particular procedure will be performed.
Your doctor explains the recommended approach before beginning. Available options may include spinal or extremity adjustments, kinesiotaping, dry needling and recommended exercises, depending on the findings. Ask about the purpose, expected experience and alternatives for a procedure you do not understand. You can discuss your comfort and preferences at any point.
Questions About Time, Clothing and Costs
Wear clothing that permits comfortable movement and tell us if you need help with positioning or getting onto the table. If you have time constraints, ask the office about the expected appointment length when scheduling. The time needed can depend on the evaluation and any services recommended.
Ask for an explanation of expected charges, including the examination, any X-rays when needed and other services. Bring your current insurance card and review our payment information. Coverage for one service does not mean that every recommended service is covered under the same terms.
Leave With Clear Next Steps
Before leaving, check that you understand the findings discussed, any recommended activities and the purpose of a follow-up. Ask your doctor to demonstrate an exercise if the instructions are unclear and explain what response should prompt a call to the office.
A useful plan identifies activities you want to do more comfortably and a way to review your response. Tell us about a change in symptoms or concerns about costs and scheduling. Recommendations can be revisited as your needs change; you do not need to keep an unanswered question until a later stage of care.
