Chiropractic X-Rays in Charleston

Wondering whether you need chiropractic X-rays before starting care? At JP Chiropractic in West Ashley, Charleston, digital X-rays may be recommended when your health history and examination show a reason for imaging. They are one part of an evaluation, rather than an automatic requirement for every patient.

Why Would a Chiropractor Take X-Rays?

X-rays provide images of bones and certain structural changes. A chiropractor may recommend imaging to answer a specific question raised by your symptoms, an injury or the examination. The important question is how the result could change your care, suggest precautions or indicate a need for referral.

Your doctor will explain why imaging is recommended and discuss the findings with you. Tell us about recent imaging so we can consider existing information before recommending new images.

What Can a Lower Back X-Ray Show?

A lower back X-ray, also called a lumbar spine X-ray, can show the vertebrae, their alignment and some changes involving bones or joint spaces. It can help answer certain questions about spinal structure, but it does not show every cause of lower back pain.

Discs and nerves are not directly shown in the same detail as on an MRI. A normal X-ray does not mean your pain is imaginary, and a visible structural change does not necessarily explain every symptom. Your history and physical examination remain essential. Do You Need X-Rays Before a Chiropractic Adjustment?

Not every patient needs X-rays before a chiropractic adjustment. The decision depends on your individual history, symptoms and examination findings. Imaging is generally not routine for uncomplicated lower back pain without concerning features. If a different type of imaging or another provider is more appropriate, we will explain the next step.

What to Expect With Digital Chiropractic X-Rays

If imaging is indicated, the team will explain the area being examined and help you get into position. You may need to remove metal objects that could interfere with the image and remain still briefly while it is taken. Tell the team if positioning is uncomfortable so they can assist you.

Before any X-ray, tell us if you are pregnant or could be pregnant, and share relevant health information and previous imaging. Your clinician can discuss whether imaging is needed and what options are appropriate for you.

Chiropractic X-Rays vs. INSiGHT Thermography

These tools provide different information. Digital X-rays show bones and certain structural features. INSiGHT thermography measures skin temperature patterns; it does not create an X-ray image and does not replace indicated imaging or a clinical examination. Questions to Ask About X-Rays and Cost

Ask what the image is intended to show, how it could affect your care, whether previous images are sufficient and what the expected cost will be. Charges and insurance benefits vary. Our team can discuss costs and help you understand coverage questions before proceeding. See our insurance information or contact the office for details about your visit.

Can You Bring Previous Imaging?

Yes. Tell the office about earlier X-rays, MRI studies or other relevant imaging and bring available reports. Ask whether the actual images should be shared as well as the written interpretation. Existing information can help your doctor understand what has already been evaluated and decide whether another image would answer a new question.

An older image does not automatically need to be repeated, and a previous report does not replace a current examination. Your doctor considers the history, findings and reason for imaging together, then explains any recommendation and how it could affect care.
