What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs across the bottom of the feet and connects the heel to the toes. It is the most common cause of heel pain and its cause is not well understood but is commonly found in people who are overweight or are runners. Plantar fasciitis causes a stabbing pain in the heel that is usually worse upon taking the first steps of the day but can also be triggered after standing for a long period of time or standing up after sitting for a prolonged period of time.
